Mamaw Gail, whose real name is Gail Morris, was born

on May 3, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan, but Pike County, Kentucky

has always been home. After living in North Carolina for a short time,

she returned to Pike County in 1983 and never left. She settled in the small

Appalachian town of Dorton, Kentucky, a place without even a stoplight, but full of love, family, and neighbors who help one another.

 

For years, Gail was known throughout the community for her diner, Gail’s Lunchbox, a favorite spot for locals and truck drivers until it closed in 2012. Even after closing the diner, Gail never stopped cooking. Today, nearly 30 family members still gather at her home every Sunday for dinner, where she prepares the Appalachian recipes passed down from her mother and grandmother.

 

Everything changed when her grandson Ethan finally convinced her to let him film her cooking. Gail told Ethan not to post the video on Facebook, but Ethan didn’t post it on Facebook, he posted it on TikTok instead. Overnight, @mamawgailcooks went viral. By the seventh video, the famous biscuit video, the account was reaching over 10 million views and gaining followers by the minute.

 

Today, Mamaw Gail is nearing 1 million followers on TikTok and has over 1 million followers across all social platforms combined. She shares Appalachian cooking, family traditions, and the recipes she grew up on while teaching people around the world about her Appalachian roots.

 

Her online success eventually led Gail and Ethan to Food Network’s Family Recipe Showdown hosted by Octavia Spencer. In the episode “Biscuit Bliss,” they competed with Gail’s viral biscuits and other Appalachian favorites, winning both rounds of the competition and bringing home $10,000. Family Recipe Showdown is now streaming on HBO Max.

 

Mamaw Gail lovingly calls her followers her “GRANfans,” and Ethan proudly serves as her “GRANager.” Together, they continue sharing Appalachian traditions, homemade meals, and a whole lot of love with the world.
